High blood pressure or tight cuff?

I bought an at home omron blood pressure monitor and my readings vary from about 155/80 to 140/76. The cuff tightens my arm to the point that it hurts and leaves red marks all over it. Do I need a bigger cuff or is the tightness normal? Also how many points can my blood pressure drop with a cuff my size?

Take the cuff to your pharmacist to have it calibrated first. Then go to your doctor and have him take your BP the normal way and then use your cuff so you can compare. Your doctor can also evaluate your cuff to see if perhaps the size is an issue, because it can throw the readings off if your arm is quite large.

Sometimes high blood pressure makes the cuff feel REALLY tight. Your readings are high enough to warrant medication so you need to sort out whether or not your home cuff is working properly, the cuff is the correct size, and what your benchmarked BP is at the doctor's office.

Tip: when taking your blood pressure, don't talk - just sit and relax.
