Present Teeth Whitening Situation - History of Teeth Cleaning Procedures

One of the hardest things to do in life is to smile especially when you don't have that perfect pearly white teeth. To smile is one of the most important aspects of our life. It brings about many advantages not to mention the positive outlook it can radiate to other persons watching you. A smile can influence many and heal a sick heart. This expression is not very hard to do if we have contentment and happiness in our life and of course, the most coveted gleaming white teeth!

The Smile History

For all we know, teeth whitening procedure is as old as the human civilization itself. Our modern civilization today is not only the ones concerned about making our teeth perfectly white but even the ancestors of the great ancestors of our great ancestors have been using this procedure already. The use of this method predates the A.D. era and it was established to have been used actually long before this epoch, way back 3000 B.C. Of course, people back then don't have the same toothbrush as we have for today but no matter how advanced we are today when it comes to tools the concept is still very similar, rubbing the teeth with a material that can get rid of any food residues that cling to it after eating.

What they have back then is something called "chew sticks". The name suggests that this is not a typical toothbrush we know today but instead, it is just made from any kind of a small and tender tree branch that has its one end unraveled or frayed. Very efficient, right!

No matter how crude the material is as long as it can create a clean and white finish it doesn't matter anyway. Until today many people in different parts of the globe are still using the chew sticks, a lingering proof of its effectiveness in teeth cleaning.

Smile-stones: A Teeth Cleaning Procedure Timeline

The year was 1498 when the first "bristled" toothbrush came into existence in China. Its bristles were actually part of the back hair in the neck region of the famous Siberian hogs. Either Chinese bamboo or hollow bones were used as handles wherein these "bristles" were stuck. The wandering Europeans were the first to notice these and also the first to bring it into their own homeland.
Many years past and many hog's hair have been lost already before this kind of material has been replaced with plastic. After nearly half a millennium of using hog's hair as tooth brush bristles, teeth whitening procedure had encountered a major change. Thanks to the Du Pont genius when nylon was discovered in 1938. Nylon became a popular substitute for the animal's hair but it was not until 1950 that soft nylon toothbrush bristles was introduced.
After a short period of time, another enhancement was introduced, the more convenient and easy to use electronic toothbrush. It was electronically operated but it was later subdued by the more convenient battery operated one. It has a motor in it that cause its bristles to automatically have its up and down motion when switched-on.

Modern Day Teeth-cleaning Situation

Since the discovery of nylon in the first trimester of the 20th century, teeth cleaning procedures as well as teeth whitening options have changed a little. Just be wise enough in choosing the best option available for you. Who knows, these procedures and techniques may linger for another 3000 years, just like the lowly but mighty "chew sticks".
